_Prescription Medicine

There are several prescription medications that can be of help to quit smoking. Most of these medications work by blocking the brain chemicals that make smoking pleasurable. Common examples are Chantix and Zyban. These drugs are not addictive, but they do have serious side effects such as depression and nightmares. In fact, a July 2011 published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that Chantix increased the risk of hospitalization from heart attack and other serious heart problems by 72 percent. These quit-smoking medications have about a 40 percent success rate when used with nicotine replacement or behavior therapy.
